Public announcement
In recent days, the public has witnessed a strong and, in the opinion of many, justified reaction from citizens and part of the professional community regarding the works in the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul complex. After the public's expressed concern, the statements and interpretations of the Republic Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments followed, justifying the legality of the procedure and the compliance of the project with professional conditions. The Minister of Culture then reacted, expressing sharp criticism and condemnation of the entire process. Finally, the Diocese of Raška-Prizren and Kosovo and Metohija, as the investor of the project, also published its statement.
We believe that the sequence of these reactions speaks volumes about the lack of timely transparency and communication with the public. We would like to remind you that the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul is the oldest monument of church architecture in Serbia and the original seat of the Raška Bishopric. This is a cultural asset of exceptional importance, the protection of which must be above any individual interest. If everything was carried out in accordance with the law and professional standards, the question arises as to why timely and clear information was not provided, why the public was brought before a fait accompli, and why doubts had to be dispelled only after pressure from citizens.
When work is carried out in a sacred complex that represents the foundation of the spiritual and cultural identity of this area, it is the responsibility of both state institutions and the Church to act with the highest degree of care, transparency, and public accountability.
Cultural heritage is not a private matter of individuals or institutions. It is the common heritage of all citizens of the Republic of Serbia and the obligation of all of us to preserve it.
On the Day of Serbian Statehood, when we recall the foundations of our statehood, constitutionality, and historical continuity, we especially emphasize that the preservation of cultural heritage is not only a matter of profession, but also a matter of national responsibility and respect for one's own identity.
The Citizens' Association "Srediste" will continue to monitor the development of events and will insist on full transparency and accountability of all relevant stakeholders.
